Emergency Grant helps provide shelter for family of five

Janet is forty years old and is a single mother to four kids.  She works one full-time job plus a part-time job, but sometimes she can’t afford to pay the rent that keeps her and her kids safely sheltered.  Last year, she was evicted from her apartment and faced a very uncertain future.  Her youngest child was with her when the sheriff showed up to place the eviction notice on the unit door.  Needless to say, this was a very difficult day in this family’s life.

Fortunately for Janet and her family, Andrea, a Child Protection Worker with the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CCAS) was there to support her and offer practical solutions. Andrea told Janet about the Emergency Assistance Grant Program supported by the Hope for Children Fund and made a referral on her behalf.   Janet was provided with funds to put towards her rent arrears.  Today, Janet’s family is comfortably living in a smaller, more affordable apartment and are grateful for the support they received from the Hope for Children Fund.

The Hope for Children Fund provides Emergency Assistance Grants to close to 200 families per year, totalling $50,000.  These funds are used by families to purchase groceries, strollers, winter clothing, or to pay utility bills or rent.   Each grant request has to be approved by the Manager of the Branch.  These grants provide a lifeline to families who are struggling to survive and have no other options available to them.

Janet is involved with the CCAS because her oldest child has behaviour issues that resulted in parent-teen conflict.  Janet is open to receiving parenting support from the CCAS as she knows it’s her best chance for her family to stay together.  She travels long distances to her jobs, works long hours and tries her best to provide a loving and secure home for her family.

If it wasn’t for the generosity of donors and support of Janet’s Child Protection Worker, this situation could have become very dire.
